Animals from factory farms are not only living in poor conditions, but are also more prone to diseases spread from feed pumped with antibiotics to aid in the increase of fat on the body. In addition, many of these farms contribute to climate change with use of fertilizers and chemicals that pollute both the land and water sources.

“The alternative to factory-farm meat — grass-fed meat — is not just better for the environment and better for the animals, but better for you, too,” - Functional Medicine Director Mark Hyman, MD.
Now, let's make that choice:
[[Grass Fed Beef($3.20)->Grass_0]]
[[Organic Beef($2.80)->Non-Grass_0]]
[[I don't want gains.->Phase 2]]You would like some beef in your taco. Gotta get those gains somehow, and what better way than this protein packed meat! So to the meat aisle you go. You arrive at the aisle and are faced with a decision that actually means more than you think: Which type of beef do you choose?
[[Grass Fed Beef ($3.20)->Grass_0]]
[[Organic Beef ($2.80)->Non-Grass_0]]
If you are stuck, check out some information on the two choices you have:
[[More infomation->More Infomation]]Are organic and grass fed the same?
Organic means the animal was not given hormones, antibiotics or man-made pesticides in its feed. The feed, however, is not necessarily grass but corn and soy. Grass-fed meat is different in that the animal was pasture-raised.
</style>

</div>
...
Note: grass-fed often is organic, but organic is not necessarily grass-fed! (That pesky "a square is a rectangle but a rectange is not always square" analogy from highschool geometry actaully has real world tangentials!).
[[Go back.->More Infomation]]I thought you would never ask! Let's learn about this fascinating process.
You chose grass fed beef. Your cow was let loose to freely live its life eating the grass it was always meant to. However, it can not be alive if you are to eat it.
Would you wish to continue with the slaughter or go without meat?
[[Yes, slaughter away.->Slaughter]]
[[No, do not kill the poor cow!->Do Not Kill]]You chose to grab the regular beef. This may have been for budgetary concerns or just because you do not care how your beef is raised.
But if you did know, would you care? Would you like to know how your cattle were raised?
[[Yes I would like to.->Non-Grass_1]]
[[No, Please Don't.->Slaughter]]Animals are typically stunned before they’re killed to prevent them from feeling the pain (how humane are we!), either with carbon dioxide, an electric current, or a captive bolt pistol.
Ideally, the animal remains calm throughout the process, not just for ethical reasons though: Adrenaline means that stressed animals make for tougher meat, and bruised meat can’t be sold.
[[How does the meat get to the store?->Prepare]]Your cattle were raised over crowded and cramped into feedlots for much of their short lives. Living this unfulfilling life they were then stunned and prepared for [[slaughter->Slaughter]].After the meat is prepared and graded, it is cut into smaller pieces and packaged into plastic bags and vacuum sealed. To travel to the store the meat is loaded onto an 18 wheeler and is shipped to your local grocery store.
[[How did my choices affect the world around me?->Choice]]By choosing the grass fed beef, you not only afforded the cattle a humane life, but you also helped an emerging industry grow 30-40% year over year and helped keep almost 1 million farmers employed in the process. In addition, you helped 3.5 million truck drivers, 711,000 of which self employed, put food on their own tables. Great Job!
Why do I have the sneaky feeling this is [[too good to be true..->True]]And you would be right to think that.
There are some downfalls that come from choosing the meet processing process, including the fact that you did end up killing the cattle for your benefit.
Also, the meat industry affords 14.5% of human emissions of which 41% comes from beef. But you shrug your shoulders and say [[“beef tastes too good to give up”->Phase 2]].
[[No, please do not kill the cow!->Do Not Kill]]You chose to have lettuce in your taco (healthy!). This is a great selection but do you want [[Organic($1.99)->OLettuce]] or [[Regular($1.29) lettuce->RLettuce]]How can you have a taco without a tortilla? We’re not trying to build a taco salad here! This seemingly simple process has an impact on [[so many lives->So Many Lives]], whether you realize it or not.America produces around 2.4 billion bushels of wheat each year.
Each bushel of wheat can turn into around 42 pounds of white flour, meaning that if all the wheat produced in America were turned into white flour, we could produce 100.8 billion pounds of white flour a year.

While a seemingly simple process, there’s a lot of work that goes into [[making this happen->Making This Happen]].In recent years, corn has been America’s largest crop.
It’s grown on farms all over the country, from Iowa to Texas and everywhere in between, then much of it is exported to trading partners such as Mexico, Colombia, South Korea, and Japan.
Of course, we do also keep some corn for ourselves.
Not all of the corn grown is meant for direct consumption, however, as a large percentage of it goes to animal feed and corn products such as ethanol, corn syrup, or corn flour, which is what goes into your corn tortilla.
Corn flour is also used as a gluten-free alternative to wheat flour for those with gluten sensitivities such as Celiac Disease.
[[Ok, cool.->CornEdu]]We can start out by talking about the environmental impact of your corn tortilla.
Every little step in its production, starting from the planting and harvesting of the corn, to the transportation, to the processing, and even the baking itself has an environmental impact, both because of the [[effort->Effort]] and materials that go into each step and the [[emissions->CornEmissions]] that come out of it.In each step of the corn tortilla production process, there’s a lot of human labor involved. (2)]The production of 1 kg of corn tortillas emits .419 kg of CO2 into the atmosphere.
Keep in mind that since CO2 is a gas, one kilogram takes up a lot of space in the atmosphere.
Suddenly, the amount of CO2 your tortilla released into the air seems like a whole lot more.
Every action you take has an impact on the environment, and all these actions add up to create the overall impact that we as human beings have on the planet.

Also, another important part of organic farming is that if the cows become sick, they are treated holistically with homeopathic medicines.

(click-replace: "How is this different than non-organic farms?")[At non-organic farms, cows are routinely given antibiotics to prevent infection, even when they are healthy. You wouldn’t think that organic farming would have an effect on the environment, but it actually does. Organic farmers are not permitted to use chemicals that pollute the air, water or food. Instead, organic farmers use non-toxic pest control methods and sustainable farming techniques like crop rotation and composting. These methods ensure rich, healthy soils while conserving water and fossil fuels. They also are encouraging to wildlife, which has drastically declined over the last 50 years.
